Is it possible to be in love with a building?

Ok, I’m going to keep this post short. I’ll tell you why: Because I’m on my last day of my free trial membership to Urban Active Fitness in Ballantyne. And I want to go spend as much time as there today as I possibly can.

I first heard about this gym from Scott, who told me that they have a pool for lap swimming and they offer memberships on a month-to-month basis (no contract). I was a member at Sports and Fitness until recently, and when that membership expired they increased the rates. With my newfound interest in triathlons, I decided to see what Urban Active was all about. And, um, goodbye Sports and Fitness – thanks for the memories …

Anil was in town last week and was happy to visit the gym with me for a trial membership. As we got the tour of the gym, I knew I was falling head over heels for this place. I’ve said several times to anyone who will listen over the past week: If I take every favorite piece of every gym I’ve ever been to, this gym has all of those pieces.

Individual TVs on the cardio equipment (watch whatever you want.) An indoor track. Cardio cinema (seriously, a movie theather with cardio machines instead of seats. Awesome.). Spin bikes have a digital read so you can actually see how far you are going. And if there’s no class in session you can turn on the TV in the spin room and take a virtual class. Some of the weight machines are a brand called Hoist, and it’s hard to explain why this brand so awesome but trust me, it is. It does a good job of allowing the equipment to move with your body, focusing the exercising purely on the area you are focusing on. No straining your back while doing dips or anything like that. It really is awesome. There’s a ladies-only workout room within the gym that is the size of a hotel fitness center or other small-ish gym. There’s a sauna. There’s an Under Armor store inside the facility. There’s a smoothie bar that is better than the smoothie bar at my old gym (Peak Fitness. Out of business).

Will I join the gym? Not right now; finances aren’t the best. And it’s a bit of a drive for me – about 20 minutes away. Not bad but I wish it were better. But I will enjoy it while I can!

Oh, and I saw a sign up there yesterday saying that if you bring a toy worth $10 to donate, you can get a free 30-day membership. Do it before Dec. 23. I plan to. Let me know if you do so we can meet up there – I seriously love that place. Especially this week – who wants to work out in 14 degree weather??
