Eyes lock across a crowded world
and hers – certainly a crowded heart
but she will make room for him
against all of the rules
“I love you” they’ll say –
but not too much
“I want you” they’ll write
and then they get to explain
what that means
Does the pot of gold actually even exist?
Maybe they smoked it the day they met.
and in once glance across the room
they wonder and they plan –
where their kids will sleep and
where his dishes will go and
who will fold laundry
they give deadlines to themselves
Kiss her but she can’t kiss you back
lips touch but that doesn’t count
Don’t look at her with her towel off
then he might have to see
all she’s been covering up.
