#nanowrimo excerpt: On hickeys

Another phone call from Kylie of course meant another moment of drama. “How do you get rid of a hickey?” she asked.

“Who gave you a hickey?” Erykah asked back.

“Um, it doesn’t matter. I just need to know how to get rid of it.”

“Kylie, that is sooo trashy. Why would you let someone do that?”

“I didn’t let him,” she exclaimed. “You know I have really sensitive skin!”

“Rub it with the edge of a quarter,” Erykah said with a sigh. She recalled a moment several years ago, as she lay in Ryan’s lap right before a brunch with his mom, as he vigorously rubbed her neck with a coin. It had hurt – badly – but he held her head as he did it, apologizing profusely for causing her this pain, for having to cover up a very bad idea with very good intentions from the night before.

“How do you know that?” Kylie said.

“I read it online, a long time ago. Just try it. It’s going to hurt like hell though. And tell your boy toy that it’s redneck to leave marks like that.”

“I don’t care if it hurts. Much better than wearing turtlenecks and feeling stuffy for 3 days,” Kylie said. “This is so frustrating.”

“The mark of true love.” Erykah started laughing. Only Kylie could get herself into this mess. “Good luck with your quarter rubbing. Make a wish and throw it into a fountain when you’re done.”

“I could use some granted wishes these days,” Kylie said, and then she hung up.

I love seeing these conversations in fiction. We’ve all had them, but it takes something like that to make us realize that *everyone* has had that conversation, or one like it. Nice!

I love the redneck line. I really like Erykah here. Reminds me of my Jenna 🙂

I second the motion about the redneck line. That truly makes this whole conversation. That and Erykah’s suave dodge when asked how she knew about the quarter trick!

When memories come back of my hickey giving-and-receiving days, I’m grateful I came of age when flipped up collars ruled the world. Late-80’s preppie FTW!
